Helping Your Family to Succeed at and Enjoy Daily Life
The simplest and easiest way to help your family succeed at and enjoy daily life is to hold a family meeting. Being consistent and holding your family meeting each week will help to create family unity, promote communication, develop problem solving and goal setting skills.
There are a few simple steps to take prior to the first meeting to ensure you have a successful meeting. Begin by selecting a time and day for your meeting that consistently coincides with each family members schedule. Next step, decide on an age-appropriate role for each member. For example, each meeting should have a Leader, this person keeps the meeting flowing on schedule and on task. The meeting needs to have a Secretary to record the details of the meeting. Another important role is the Meeting Host, this person helps to create a comfortable atmosphere for the meeting, same role as a “Party Host”. Another fun role could be that of Super Helper, this role and duty extends above and beyond the family meeting. Super Helper is to encourage each family member to complete their chores and reach their goals for the week, in a positive and encouraging manner. These roles can rotate among the family members or can be assigned according to personal strengths.
The next step to having a successful meeting is to follow an agenda. The agenda should be decided upon and written out ahead of time. For example, start by having each member talk about what is going well for them at this time, then discuss any issues of concern they are facing. Next discuss any suggestions or solutions for resolving their issue of concern. Everyone should listen with sensitivity and speak with respect for each other, never allowing any put-downs or interruptions. Next, individual chores and goals for the week should be discussed. This might also include any scheduled tasks for the week, such as practices or meetings, for each member. Finally, any family goals, such as, family vacations, holidays, birthdays or projects should be discussed. Lastly, the Secretary should give a recap of the last meetings discussion from the recorded details. Each member should then provide an update on the goals, chores and issues of concern from the previous meeting.
Starting your children on the positive habit of discussing their goals and dreams, as well as their concerns and solutions. This will give them a great head start into adulthood. Begin this week and create a lasting family tradition that your children will positively remember and benefit from, and hopefully continue with their own children.
